Halo: Campaign Evolved Skulls – Effects, Locations & Campaign Remix

Updated 2026-07-24

On this page

Halo: Campaign Evolved features 42 usable Skulls: 26 returning fan-favorite Skulls and 16 new Skulls. Thirty-nine of these are hidden collectibles scattered across the 13 campaign missions, while three more become automatically available once you unlock Campaign Remix. This guide explains what each skull does, where to find the hidden ones, and how to get the most out of the new Remix system.

How Skulls Work

Skulls are collectible relics that modify gameplay when activated. In Halo: Campaign Evolved, picking up a hidden Skull immediately unlocks its mission modifier, which you can then enable or disable before launching any future mission. You can apply multiple skulls at once for layered effects.

All 42 skulls are usable for standard mission playthroughs and for Campaign Remix runs. The three non-collectible skulls – Adaptation, Reload, and Armistice – are granted automatically when you unlock Campaign Remix.

Finding All 39 Hidden Skulls

The 39 collectible skulls are distributed evenly across the campaign:

  • 10 original campaign missions – 3 skulls hidden in each mission, for a total of 30 skulls.
  • 3 new missions (set before Halo: Combat Evolved) – 9 skulls, with three per mission.

Skulls are hidden in out-of-the-way locations, often requiring platforming, vehicle use, or clever routing to reach. There are no story-related unlocks; you can revisit any completed mission to search for skulls you missed. Once you pick up a skull, it is saved permanently and its modifier becomes available for all future missions.

Tip: Bring a co-op partner to help spot hard-to-reach ledges or to trigger switches that reveal hidden skulls. Many skulls are placed near the edges of combat arenas, inside caves, or atop structures you might normally ignore.

Skull Effects Overview

The game groups skulls into several categories. Below are the effects of the new skulls, as confirmed by official sources. Returning fan-favorite skulls (like Black Eye, Catch, Grunt Birthday Party, etc.) behave as they did in previous Halo titles – their effects are not redefined here because they are unchanged.

New Skulls (16 total)

Skull NameEffect
Speed LimitDisables sprint.
Hip FireDisables weapon zoom (aim-down-sights).
MagnifiedGives the assault rifle a 60-round magazine.
Endurance SpecPrevents damage to UNSC vehicles.
PerspectiveSwitches the camera to third-person view.
Give & TakeShots drain your shields; dealing damage restores your shields.
Floor Is LavaYou take continuous damage while touching the ground.

The remaining nine new skulls are not individually named in the source material, but they belong to the "Arcade Antics" and "Challenge Skulls" categories alongside the returning ones. Their effects will be discoverable as you collect them in-game.

Returning Fan-Favorite Skulls (26 total)

The returning skulls include well-known modifiers:

  • Challenge Skulls: Black Eye, Mythic, Famine, Catch, Boom, Cowbell, Grunt Funeral, and others that increase difficulty or add enemy chaos.
  • Arcade Antics: Grunt Birthday Party, Bandana, Pinata, IWHBYD, Acrophobia, and more that add humorous or power-fantasy effects.

Each of these works exactly as it did in earlier Halo games. For example, Grunt Birthday Party makes Grunt heads explode in confetti, and Bandana provides infinite ammo.

Campaign Remix Mode

Campaign Remix is a new play mode unlocked by collecting any two skulls in the campaign. It lets you replay any completed mission with randomized enemies, remixed weapons, new visibility effects, and a random assortment of skulls.

How Remix Works

When you select a mission to Remix, the following three skulls are enabled by default:

  • Adaptation – Randomizes the enemy factions present in the mission. You might face Elites, Jackals, Flood, Sentinels, or even enemies from the Operation: Meteorite bonus missions.
  • Reload – Randomizes all pre-placed weapons in the mission. You can find weapons like the Battle Rifle, Needle Rifle, or Brute Spiker where you normally wouldn't.
  • Armistice – Enemy factions never fight one another. With Adaptation active, this means all enemies (usually enemies of each other) team up against you.

After those three are applied, you roll for a visibility modifier:

  • Spore Visibility – Covers the level in heavy, Flood-like fog.
  • Nightvision – Night vision is always active.

You can adjust the rolled visibility effect to your liking. Then you can either roll a random assortment of additional skulls (from the ones you have collected) or manually choose which skulls to enable. This gives you huge control over the challenge and chaos of each run.

Unlocking the Remix Skulls

As soon as you collect your second skull, Adaptation, Reload, and Armistice become available in your skull menu for both standard mission playthroughs and Remixed campaigns. You do not need to find them in the world – they are granted automatically.

Tips for Using Remix

  • Experiment with Armistice off – If you want to see enemy factions fight each other (for a more chaotic, traditional Halo experience), simply turn off Armistice in the skull selection screen.
  • Combine Floor Is Lava with Spore Visibility – The fog makes it harder to see the ground, adding a nasty survival twist.
  • Use Magnified with Bandana – The 60-round AR with infinite ammo is a powerful combo for mowing through remixed enemy waves.
