Cross-Platform Co-op: What Works and What Doesn't

Halo: Campaign Evolved supports seamless online cross-platform co-op among PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 players. This means you can squad up with friends regardless of their platform, playing through the entire campaign together. Online co-op supports up to four players.

This feature covers the full campaign, including the three new missions in Operation: METEORITE and the original campaign. For split-screen co-op, only console players can use it with up to two players on the same screen—cross-platform does not mix with split-screen.

What you should watch for: While crossplay is enabled by default, the available sources do not document whether crossplay can be disabled or filtered by platform. If you have a strong preference, check in-game Settings before starting a session. Also, mid-mission checkpoints and your exact in-game position do not synchronize across platforms, so join or invite friends from the main menu for best results.

Setting Up Cross-Platform Friends

To play together across platforms, every player needs to use the Xbox network as the central friend system. Here's how to add cross-platform friends:

  • Xbox mobile app – Download the app, sign in with your Microsoft account, and search for your friend's Gamertag to send a friend request.
  • Xbox Game Bar – On PC, press Win+G to open Game Bar, go to the Friends widget, and add the Gamertag.
  • Xbox.com – Visit the website, log in, and use the Friends section to add a player.

Important: For cross-platform play, the participating Xbox Gamertags must be friends on the Xbox network. Platform-specific friend lists (e.g., Steam, PSN) do not carry over for co-op. You and your friends need to agree on which Gamertag each of you will use, then add those Gamertags.

Once a friend request is accepted, the player appears in your Cross-Platform friend list in-game. The game has separate Platform (e.g., Xbox or PSN) and Cross-Platform friend lists. Either list can be used to start a co-op session, but only the Cross-Platform list includes players from different platforms.

Inviting and Joining a Co-op Session

After your friends are on the Xbox network, you can start or join a campaign co-op session:

  1. Host: From the main menu, select "Campaign" and choose "Co-op." Your fireteam will form automatically if you have cross-platform friends online.
  2. Direct join: A player can directly join a platform or cross-platform friend from that friend's profile while the friend is on the main menu, as long as the lobby is not full and its privacy settings allow joining.
  3. Invite: The host can send an invite through the in-game social menu, which also uses Xbox network invites. On PC, the Xbox Game Bar handles invites; on consoles, it works through the platform's notification system.

Fireteam privacy can be configured in Settings > Account > Fireteam Settings. Two options exist:

  • Friends Can Join – Any friend on your Xbox network can join without an invite, as long as there is room.
  • Invite Only – Only players who receive a direct invite can join.

What you should watch for: The available sources do not provide platform-by-platform steps for accepting and launching every invitation type (e.g., PSN notification vs. Xbox notification). In practice, accept the invite through your platform's typical notification panel. If an invite does not appear, ensure you are both online and that the host's fireteam is not full (max 4 players) or set to "Invite Only."

Shared Cross-Platform Progression

A major feature of crossplay is shared cross-platform progression between PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5. This means your progress saves across all platforms you play on, using your Xbox network account as the central save.

Specifically, the following items synchronize across platforms:

  • Mission unlocks – Which missions you have completed are synced.
  • Rally Point unlocks – Fast-travel points in missions carry over.
  • Skulls – All collected Skulls (including the new ones) are synced.
  • Terminals – All hidden terminal discoveries carry across.
  • Achievements – Achievements/trophies unlock across platforms as you trigger them.

What does NOT sync: Mid-mission checkpoints and the player's exact position do not synchronize. So if you jump from PC to PS5 mid-campaign, you will start the next mission from the beginning, not from the middle of a previous session.

What you should watch for: The available sources do not establish whether story completion unlocks platform-specific trophies or achievements retroactively after switching platforms. For example, if you start on Xbox and complete a mission, the PlayStation 5 may not automatically grant the equivalent trophy when you switch. To be safe, complete major milestones on your primary platform, or check your achievement lists manually.

Troubleshooting and Tips

  • Friends not appearing? Double-check that both parties have added the correct Xbox Gamertags and that each friend request has been accepted. The cross-platform friend list only shows friends on the Xbox network.
  • Can't join? Ensure the host's fireteam privacy is set to "Friends Can Join" or that you have received an explicit invite. Also confirm the lobby is not full (max 4 players).
  • Progress not showing? If progression isn't syncing, verify you are signed into the same Xbox network account on all platforms. Log out and back in if necessary.
  • Crossplay cannot be disabled per the available sources – but if you encounter issues, try restarting the game or your platform's network connection.
