Overview
The Most Dangerous Game is the second bonus mission in Halo: Campaign Evolved. Its main objective sequence is Vacation Destination, Mind the Gap, and Hunters Hunted. This walkthrough covers every encounter, hidden collectible, and checkpoint-friendly strategy, based on a solo Legendary completion.
Vacation Destination – Opening to the Jackal Sniper Arena
Follow Johnson between the cliffs toward the Covenant structure. When you encounter the first pack of Brutes, use the Needle Rifle (carried over from Boarding Action) to enrage one or two Brutes. Let them fight the surrounding Covenant, then finish the survivor.
Inside the next room, you'll find UNSC weapons. Stick with your Needle Rifle if you have it; this is a good resupply point only if you started with default weapons.
Exit into the open air and turn left into the trees. Your ally Williams warns that the sleeping Grunts are an ambush trigger—shoot them from range instead of approaching for melee kills. When Brutes and other Covenant enter from the sides, use the rocks as cover and enrage any Brutes you see.
Temperamental Skull – First Appearance
The Temperamental Skull is unlocked by shooting a specific golden, purple-accented Elite (wielding an Energy Sword) at three separate appearances during a single run. The target retreats after each encounter rather than staying to fight.
The first appearance is on the upper-right side of the wooded Jackal-sniper arena, overlooking the battlefield. Shoot him (breaking his shield is sufficient), and he will run away through the door behind him.
Jackal Sniper Arena
Clear the ambush squad, then move into the wooded area ahead. This is a classic sniper zone: slowly inch out from cover, look for the pink glint of Jackal snipers on the tree leaves, and eliminate them from range. Focus on snipers while your allies (Williams and Johnson) handle Brutes and ground troops. Enrage a Brute if possible to help split attention.
Watch for stealth Elites with swords—their weapons are visible in the warm light. After clearing the area, grab a Beam Rifle from a dead Jackal if you don't already have a long-range weapon.
Overshield Location: Before following the objective marker out of the wooded area, stay left and search behind the furthest tree for a cubby containing a dead Marine and an Overshield. Save this Overshield for later.
Right or Left Route Split
At the route split, take the ramp to the right and go through the right-hand door. This leads to a sniper perch overlooking the bridge. Eliminate the Jackal sniper first, then reduce the distant enemy force (including any visible Brutes or Grunts) before advancing.
Temperamental Skull – Second Appearance
The target Elite appears far behind the Wraith near the entrance to the next area. He will leave through the doors quickly if not shot. Be fast: shoot him before he retreats.
Recession Skull
At the prison entrance bridge, look at the two lit braziers flanking the large locked near-side door. Each brazier contains an explosive canister. Destroy both canisters (shoot or use frag grenades). The door opens to reveal the Recession Skull inside.
- Skull Effect: When active, the Recession Skull makes each shot consume twice the normal amount of ammunition.
Wraith Encounter
From the sniper perch, neutralize the Wraith by shooting off its square purple front panel, then snipe the exposed Elite pilot. Avoid letting later Elites re-enter the vehicle. Priority targets also include the turret in the back—headshot the gunner as usual.
Mind the Gap – Prison Quarter and Terminal
Prison Quarter
In the prison quarter, do not use the panel that opens the cells containing angry Brutes unless you deliberately want to fight them. The separate objective room ahead releases the captive Marines—focus on that.
Penitent Report Terminal
At the junction after the prison fighting, take the right-hand door into a small storage room. The Penitent Report Terminal stands on the raised section in the center.
Temperamental Skull – Third Appearance
The third and final appearance occurs outside, after dialogue about Covenant shipping operations. When you exit the door, look up and left. Shoot the marked Elite. Clear the arena, then retrieve the Temperamental Skull from the purple pylon on the higher ground.
Ghost Skull
The Ghost Skull is behind a gate after two successive bridge activations and a short cave tunnel. To reach it, stand on a co-op partner or perform a frag-grenade jump to get onto the brazier ledge on the arena-facing side.
- Skull Effect: The Ghost Skull prevents enemies from flinching when they take fire.
Hunters Hunted – Final Arena and Five-Door Room
Hunters Encounter
In the Hunters Hunted section, snipe the Jackals first. Use the arriving Marines to split enemy attention. Take a Beam Rifle from a dead Jackal to hit the Hunters while they are distracted on the ridge.
Five-Door Room
For the final five-door room, use the entrance and its boxes as the safest fallback. Grenade side-door spawns as they open. Preserve the Overshield you saved earlier for the four-Brute wave. Use an invisible Elite's Energy Sword to rush a side spawn room before its door closes.
