Halo Campaign Evolved Cinematic Stutter and Audio Sync Fix

Updated 2026-08-02

Quick answer

If cinematics stutter, use a display refresh rate that is an even multiple of 30 Hz, such as 60, 120, or 240 Hz. Halo Studios also recommends enabling the TV's Game Mode when available or disabling Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) if VRR contributes to the problem.

Do not pause and resume during a cinematic when you can avoid it: the official issue list says that can put audio and video out of sync and briefly freeze the scene.

Why refresh rate matters

The documented issue occurs when the display refresh rate is not an even multiple of 30 Hz. This page does not claim that every cinematic problem has this cause. It provides the official first-line checks for the specific playback symptom.

CheckWhat to do
Refresh rateTry 60 Hz, 120 Hz, or 240 Hz
TV processingEnable Game Mode if the display provides it
VRRTurn VRR off temporarily and replay the scene
Pause/resumeAvoid pausing during the cinematic
PC driver warningFollow the current official GPU-driver notice

Safe troubleshooting order

  1. note the mission and cinematic where the problem appears;
  2. record the current display refresh rate;
  3. switch to 60, 120, or 240 Hz;
  4. enable Game Mode on a TV if available;
  5. if stutter remains, turn VRR off temporarily;
  6. restart the cinematic without pausing it;
  7. restore one display option at a time after testing.

Changing one variable at a time makes it possible to identify which setting affected playback.

Audio and video go out of sync after pausing

The official known-issues post says pausing and resuming during a cinematic may cause:

  • audio and video desynchronization;
  • a brief visual freeze.

The official post does not provide a separate repair command. Avoid pausing the cinematic, let it finish, and replay it after restarting from an appropriate checkpoint when necessary.

The Maw opening cinematic on AMD and FSR

The July 29 update improved stability when watching or skipping the introduction cinematic in The Maw with FSR enabled on AMD driver versions 26.6.2 or 26.6.4.

That patch note records an improvement; it is not evidence that every AMD/FSR cinematic issue is fixed. If the game still shows a driver warning, follow the newest official notice and record the exact driver before reporting the problem.

Console-specific suspended-cinematic overlay

The launch known-issues notice also described an Xbox problem where suspending the game during a cinematic could leave the previous frame over later cinematics. The official recovery was a full console restart.

This is different from ordinary stutter. Do not use the PC refresh-rate instructions as a replacement for that console restart.

What this guide does not claim

  • that a specific refresh rate improves gameplay performance;
  • that VRR must stay off permanently;
  • that every cutscene is capped at 30 FPS;
  • that changing graphics quality repairs audio desync;
  • that the July 29 patch resolves every cinematic defect.
